Enterprise Connect, the industry’s largest and best show dedicated to Unified Communications and all things collaboration, kicks off next week in Orlando, Florida. I’m expecting to see the typical themes: interoperability, cloud, video and Cisco versus Microsoft. Another theme I’m expecting to see become a bigger topic is “Big Data” for Unified Communications.

Big data has been a hot topic across IT for a number of years now as business leaders look to better use the massive amounts of data collected. Now, the data itself doesn’t solve problems; rather it’s the analytics and processing to actually understand what the data means that has the value. I believe the communications industry can benefit from the “big data” trend, particularly when it comes to accelerating the deployment of UC.

After all these years, the complexity of migrating to IP-based systems sill plagues many businesses, slowing down the rate of deployment. This is why my research shows that although more than 80% of businesses have started a UC deployment, less than 15% have actually completed the deployment.

It’s certainly been an exciting month for Extreme Networks. Earlier this month, the company closed the acquisition of Enterasys and announced earnings that Wall Street liked so much that the stock shot up 20% to a five-year high.

And this week the company announced its new Summit X770 top-of-rack (ToR) switch. The X770 is a 1RU switch but has a whopping 104 10 Gig-E ports on it, which makes it the highest-density 1 RU switch that I know of. Alternatively, customers can get 32–40 Gig-E ports from the switch.

Why might anyone need this many ports and that much bandwidth in a single RU switch? Well, the answer is bandwidth, and there’s certainly no shortage of new bandwidth-generating applications in the data center today. Extreme is focusing this particular switch on “Big Data” environments, which is a sound strategy given the momentum behind big data today and the reliance on the network.

This week is the annual “Mobile World Congress” shows in Barcelona where we get a glimpse of what’s to come in the world of mobility. I didn’t go to Barcelona, but I’ve been following the news, and one of the more interesting announcements was Gigamon’s “Big Data for Mobile Operators.

Big data has become another one of the tech industry’s most over-used words. In the application world, it’s really a euphemism for analytics to be performed on massive amounts of data. Overused or not, companies are facing a deluge of data that they need to figure out how to capture and analyze. To date, Big Data has been an enterprise initiative limited to the data center, but it’s now become a network concern as well.
