From niche router vendor to all things networking

Cisco’s new campaign “There’s Never Been A Better Time” urges everyone to consider how the network can solve the world’s biggest problems. The company is on a mission to change the world, but it didn’t start out that way. As Cisco evolved from a niche router vendor to the de facto standard for all things networking, so too has its message to the world.

Brocade’s network automation platform allows IT operations to automate networking tasks, including provisioning, validation and troubleshooting

In several of my previous posts, I’ve connected the dots between digital transformation and the need for IT to evolve. IT professionals need new technologies, tools and processes to meet the demands of the digital era. This often requires a willingness to do things that were never the norm in previous technology eras.

New products give IT a way to create a zero-trust model of security — that is, trust nothing and build the trust relationships as needed.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a much-discussed topic these days, with smart this and smart that and our rapid movement into a world in which everything is connected. But in this IoT world security has been, and will continue to be, the top barrier for quite some time.

Metcalfe’s Law states that the value of a network is proportional to the square of the number of nodes connected. So as we add more nodes to a network, the value grows exponentially. Hence the networks in a world in which everything is connected has substantially more value than a network with some things connected or parallel networks.

The decision came down to what solution was best for the media company, not what was easiest or cost the least

Jeff Fairbanks, Global Head of AV and Media Technology, Technical Operations at Bloomberg, led the process to integrate Vidyo technology into Bloomberg’s Nexi.

Earlier this year, Vidyo announced that Bloomberg selected it to provide the enabling technology for Nexi, Bloomberg’s new global communications platform that enables the company’s employees to connect over video with each other and the rest of the world.

Companies using Cisco’s Application Centric Infrastructure see success, proving SDN works

There’s an inside joke in the software-defined networking industry that “SDN” stands for “still done nothing.” People say that because despite the tremendous hype around SDN, many customers remain confused about what it is, how to deploy it and what the benefits are. This is particularly true in the data center where the stakes are high and any kind of mistake can cost an organization millions of dollars.

Cisco’s new CCNA certification isn’t the cure-all to ensuring engineers’ skills remain relevant, but it gets them pointed in the right direction.

Every decade or so the IT industry goes through some kind of major transformation. Each wave of IT brings with it new technologies that drive the need for new skills and make other skills less relevant.
