Earlier this year the most recent ZK Research – Tech Target Network Purchase Intention Study was conducted.  The survey revealed that securing mobile devices represents the top security challenge for businesses.  The survey also showed that 25% of businesses now want to purchase security using an “as a service” model to simplify the deployment and on going management of security technology.

Check Point Software now can kill both of these birds with a single stone.  Earlier this year, Check Point acquired an Israeli based security company called Lacoon for $8 million.

Lacoon enhances Check Point’s mobile security and BYOD solution, Capsule, which is an alternative mobile device management (MDM) and mobile enterprise management (MEM) offering. Capsule offers core MDM capabilities such as remote wipe but also advanced features such as malware protection, segregation of business and personal data, mobile DLP and other features critical for scalable BYOD.

Lacoon gives Check Point the ability to proactively protect data on mobile devices. The company developed an as a service solution that consists of cloud-based analytics and a light agent that monitors mobile devices to identify attacks or downloads of malicious applications.  When new and unknown software is detected, the agent sends key information to Lacoon’s cloud platform, where it is analyzed using advanced techniques such as sandboxing, behavioral analysis and anomaly detection to understand real-time risk assessment.  Risk scores are then provided and dynamically updated to each device to determine how traffic from each device should be handled and which protection method should be activated, based on pre-defined policies and risk. Lacoon’s suite includes a dashboard that enables security professional to conduct investigations and forensics.

There are many MDM and MEM products available to businesses today.  However, the complexity of deploying and managing a premises solution can be overwhelming to many organizations, particularly small and mid size companies.  The combination of Lacoon and Check Point gives IT departments the advanced tools required to secure mobile devices without the associated complexity of deployment.
